The First World War was having a great impact on all aspects of life in 1918
including fashion and dressmaking.. This CD includes articles pertaining to the fact that in 1918 Americans were asked to economize and conserve in order to support the war effort in every possible way. Many supplies were rationed, including those directly affecting clothing. These restrictions on materials inspired designers to narrow the silhouette which they did very successfully. Also, many articles strongly recommended that old clothes be “made over” so there would be little need to buy new fabric. There are several knitting patterns included in this CD used by women as they again "made do" as part of the war effort. Corset information is available here too. It might not appear that corsets are used - but they are. This 1918 compilation will provide inspiration and fascination regarding this critical time in our nations history. This disc is a compilation of images from The Delineator, The Designer, Women's Home Companion, McCall's, The American Woman, Woman's World, and Modern Priscilla magazines from the year 1918. I have selected images form these publications pertaining to women's fashion and dressmaking.
